Arnaud Soubeyran Nougat

ARNAUD SOUBEYRAN, the origins of which date back to 1837 starting with the marriage between talented confectioner Mr. Arnaud and Miss Soubeyran, is the most ancient producer of traditional nougats in Montélimar, France.  Run by the family’s third generation, the firm has nowadays broadened its range of confectionery and shares its know-how within the charming atmosphere of a museum entirely dedicated to nougat.

For 15 years, ARNAUD SOUBEYRAN has packaged its Nougats, Calissons, Marshmallow and Pralineswith three Schib Flow Wrappers and it has just recently purchased its fourth Schib, a new CO 50 that will soon be installed. Didier Honnore, Director of ARNAUD SOUBEYRAN, declares “Schib machines have always supported us efficiently, fully meeting our need to pack a wide range of sweets, biscuits, marshmallow and pastry. We are really satisfied, the machines are very flexible, reliable and easy to clean. Furthermore, they are backed up by a flawless after-sales service. No doubt, all of these pluses led us to choose Schib once again when we had to purchase our fourth packaging machine. Actually, this one will be an advanced, new generation CO50, featuring an appealing design coupled with even higher performances.”

The CO50’s rotary motion twin jaws, operated by 3-axis drive technology, will allow speeds of up to 200 ppm. The machine is equipped with motorized film pre-feed, reel run out sensor, pre-printed film registration, and many other options.

Originally brown in color, made of honey, spices and walnuts, ‘Nux Gatum’ has spanned centuries from the ancient times up to present days.  Its journey from the East to Greece led it to Marseille where it set in under the name of ‘Nougat’ in the XVII century, among the 13 most typical Provencal desserts.  By going up the Rhône, a determining stop in Montélimar changed the brown color of this home-made confectionery into the white one and the walnuts into almonds. Widely exported and appreciated all around the world, this popular and nice delicacy connected to the memories of festivals and holidays still remains a Provencal sweet that cannot be forgotten once tasted.

Mike Samphire, Engineering Manager at Five Star Fish, was delighted with their new Aura VFFS machines, the installation and performance.

“The install and commissioning phase went well and according to plan, which meant there was no disruption to our overall production requirements. With Hayssen Flexible Systems’ help we were able to find the ideal full technical solution to suit our budget,” comments Mike Samphire.

As part of the project, Hayssen Flexible Systems offered Five Star Fish a pre-shipment inspection and operator familiarisation, allowing them to review the machines prior to arrival on site.

“We had regular communication with Hayssen Flexible Systems’ project management team throughout the entire order process, keeping us up to date with what was happening with our systems during the entire manufacturing process. The support from customer services, including the availability of spares from Nottingham was a definite bonus for us.”

Due to production demands, Five Star Fish needed their new machines a week earlier than originally expected. Hayssen Flexible Systems was able to meet this late request and achieved the early delivery. The Aura 450LF VFFS intermittent packaging machines complete with Yamato weighers were installed in two days over a weekend, enabling production to catch up the backlog after the first shift, thereby ensuring that there was no disruption.

Five Star Fish’s Aura 450LFs are currently on site packing pillow packs of IQF breaded fish fillets at various weights ranging from 220g – 2700g at speeds of approximately 60ppm.

The UK’s leading supplier of dried fruits, nuts and seeds, Whitworths, has recently purchased Hayssen Flexible Systems’ Novus VFFS continuous motion packaging machine. This is the second machine that Whitworths has purchased in the space of 12 months.

Whitworths was established 125 years ago in the UK and is a widely recognised brand, offering products for snacking, as well as baking purposes. The company started off as a flour producer and throughout the years has expanded to producing dried fruit and nuts.

Whitworths’ first machine was purchased to improve the output at which Whitworths was packing bags of dried fruits. Due to increased customer demand, Whitworths needed a new machine for their additional nut packing line and decided to opt for another Novus 350. Whitworths has worked with Sandiacre’s intermittent machines for a number of years and has been impressed with the reliability of their machines. During Interpack, they visited the Bary-Wehmiller stand and decided to purchase the Novus demonstration machine on a short lead time.

Whitworths, based in Wellingborough in the UK, was impressed with both the machine layout and the Novus’ flexibility to produce pillow, quad and Doy packs. The machine layout of Whitworths’ machine, allows easier accessibility to the operator interface, thereby enabling the operator to switch between the machine’s different features with ease.

According to Sean Cornes, Engineering Manager at Whitworths, the simplicity and ease of maintenance of the Novus have significantly assisted their production. Sean Cornes, commented, “The Novus machine has helped us to increase our productivity in the packaging of our fruit, nuts and seed products. It is easy to operate and customer support is always available from Hayssen Flexible Systems.”

The Novus VFFS machine is highly flexible and is customised to meet customers’ requirements. The modular assemblies included with the Novus machine help to reduce changeover times, making changing pack styles simple and quick. For more information, please contact sales@hayssen.com.

Michelle’s Bakery
is a local favorite near Rutherford College, North Carolina. Alongside their grill, Michelle’s Bakery distributes a large variety of homemade cakes, pies, cookies and other desserts. Michelle’s Bakery recently trialed a new Rose Forgrove Merlin Blu flow wrapper. The company needed a flow wrapper that could handle the packaging of various smaller bakery items as well as whole pies and larger bakery products for retail display.

Tammy Cannon, Co-owner of Michelle’s Bakery, oversees the packaging of their bakery product lines, and was happy to accept the Merlin Blu on a trial basis. Positioned for substantial growth, the company had a need for automated packaging equipment.  Michelle’s Bakery has since purchased that same Merlin Blu, which steadily wraps cookies day after day. One of the features that appealed to Cannon was the hygienic features, with tool-less removal of guarding, which makes for fast and easy cleaning of the flow wrapper. Another benefit of the Merlin that led to a final sale is its capability to handle a wide range of products with its easy to use adjustable forming box and wide jaws. Taking advantage of these features and the user-friendly operator interface, Michelle’s Bakery can easily switch from wrapping small cookies to full size pies. The B&R Industrial Automation control system with color icon controls make it easy for Cannon’s team to set packaging parameters and make quick changeovers.

Ryan Glenn, Horizontal Sales Leader for Hayssen Flexible Systems, coordinated the project with Michelle’s Bakery. He comments, “I initially bought one of Michelle’s Bakery pound cake slices while traveling. I was impressed with their high-quality bakery products.  Their close proximity to our global headquarters in Duncan, SC, where the Merlin Blu is manufactured, made them an ideal candidate for a beta installation. The Merlin Blu is an ideal flow wrapper to help them achieve packaging that effectively displays Michelle’s Bakery tasty treats while maintaining the freshness of their products. I look forward to partnering with Michelle’s Bakery as their operations continue to grow.”

Currently, Michelle’s Bakery is using the Merlin Blu to wrap their famous chocolate oatmeal cookies in single serve packs at 50 packs per minute, as well as whole coconut pies at a rate of 25 per minute.

Fox’s Biscuits, one of the UK’s leading biscuit manufacturers, located in Batley in the UK, has recently purchased a new Rose Forgrove Merlin HSE flow wrapper from HayssenSandiacre.

Fox’s Biscuits, who are part of the 2 Sisters Food Group, a food manufacturer with 47 sites based throughout Europe, have been working in partnership with HayssenSandiacre on their Caffè project to assist with a new product launch. Their recently purchased Merlin HSE is currently packing Thins and Snaps in trays, through a hand-fed line.

Fox’s Biscuits is an existing Rose Forgrove customer, with over 5 flow wrappers on site in Batley, Leeds.

Chris Rogers, Project Engineer at Fox’s Biscuits in Batley, explained why they opted for the Merlin HSE flow wrapper, “Partnering with Rose Forgrove for this project could not have gone more smoothly. The installation was carried out professionally, efficiently and on time. HayssenSandiacre promised us a machine on a short lead time. This was essential to enable us to meet consumer demand and the launch of our new product.”

According to Chris Rogers, having the opportunity to utilise HayssenSandiacre’s well-equipped technology centre was a key factor in deciding on pack specification. “HayssenSandiacre assisted with all initial products and packaging trials, ensuring a high seal integrity.”

Fox’s Biscuits Merlin HSE is producing packs at a throughput of approximately 70 packs per minute.

Giant Snacks of Wahpeton, North Dakota prides itself in offering  the largest (hence the name ‘Giant Snacks’) sunflower seeds for its customer base. Specializing in roasting and packaging high-quality in-shell sunflower  seeds, in-shell pumpkin seeds, and corn snacks, Giant Snacks offers multiple  flavors including Dill, Salt & Pepper, Bacon Ranch and Kettle Roast (a  lower sodium sweet flavor). Sunflower seeds are sold to consumers in 3-oz,  5-oz, 5.75-oz, 9-oz and 12-oz with easy resealable pour spout bag sizes.

To process and package more than 3.5 million pounds of sunflower seeds each year, Giant Snacks  operates two twelve-hour shifts, five days a week. Working with  HayssenSandiacre, Giant Snacks recently purchased a Novus VFFS bagger to expand  their packaging line. Giant Snacks previously purchased Ultima VFFS systems for their  products and are happy with the performance and durability. This led them to  look at HayssenSandiacre’s newest model, the Novus continuous motion bagger to  increase throughput speeds.
“Quality assurance  is important throughout the production process to make sure shells are not  broken or dirty, are firm and do not have a limp texture. All packages are  nitrogen flushed to assure shelf freshness,” says Al Engstrom, Giant Snacks plant manager. Just as quality is important in selecting and packaging the  seeds, fully automating its five integrated packaging lines was a priority to  increase productivity.

Sunflower seeds are fed into Yamato series scales as part of the  HayssenSandiacre Ultima ST form-fill-seal machines or the Novus continuous motion form-fill-seal. After  sealing, the package runs through a metal detector, followed by robotic pick  and place case packer. The cases are bar coded with the product type, size,  date code, time packed and who packed it. Cases are then sealed and distributed all over the U.S.

HayssenSandiacre is proud to be part of Giant Snacks’ operations as  they continue to grow. The exceptional taste of Giant sunflower seeds goes  back to 1958, when Bob Schuler began selecting the best-tasting sunflowers for  his customers. Dedication to quality is still top-priority and Giant Snacks  remains a family-owned company.
