Integrated Packaging Lines Weigh and Bag Various Types of Cereals

Santiveri Healthy Food and Natural Alternative MedicineIn 1885, a young man named Jaime Santiveri in Barcelona, Spain was diagnosed with a severe lung disease. He tried every type of medicine available in the market at the time. The only option was to try a natural, alternative medicine and luckily for him, it was the right solution. With a healthy lifestyle and alternative medicine, Jaime Santiveri was able to successfully recover from the disease. So in 1914 he opened his first factory in Spain, where he produced his own products and the company has never stopped since.

Today, Santiveri S.L. packs various types of genuine and healthy products. Cereals and bakery products are weighed and bagged on  Hayssen Logic 35 vertical form fill seal machines. The packaging line is equipped with special accessories for creating stand-up  quad bags, ranging in size from 100g to 1Kg. In order to make perfect bags, the VFFS includes a nip drive metering roll, heated plate system and updated quad sealing system. The end result is a perfectly sealed and formed quad bag at production rates of more than 40 bags per minute. The nip roller system simplifies and secures the film movement avoiding film slip while increasing speed, as well as extending the life of silicone pull belts.

The customer visited Hayssen’s Italian factory in Padova and tested the Logic machine before it shipped to Spain. Javier Santiveri, grandson of the first Santiveri, says of this most recent order, “I buy Hayssen because I have several Simionato VFFS systems and through the years the service has evolved to meet our needs and we are satisfied.”

The UK’s leading supplier of dried fruits, nuts and seeds, Whitworths, has recently purchased Hayssen Flexible Systems’ Novus VFFS continuous motion packaging machine. This is the second machine that Whitworths has purchased in the space of 12 months.

Whitworths was established 125 years ago in the UK and is a widely recognised brand, offering products for snacking, as well as baking purposes. The company started off as a flour producer and throughout the years has expanded to producing dried fruit and nuts.

Whitworths’ first machine was purchased to improve the output at which Whitworths was packing bags of dried fruits. Due to increased customer demand, Whitworths needed a new machine for their additional nut packing line and decided to opt for another Novus 350. Whitworths has worked with Sandiacre’s intermittent machines for a number of years and has been impressed with the reliability of their machines. During Interpack, they visited the Bary-Wehmiller stand and decided to purchase the Novus demonstration machine on a short lead time.

Whitworths, based in Wellingborough in the UK, was impressed with both the machine layout and the Novus’ flexibility to produce pillow, quad and Doy packs. The machine layout of Whitworths’ machine, allows easier accessibility to the operator interface, thereby enabling the operator to switch between the machine’s different features with ease.

According to Sean Cornes, Engineering Manager at Whitworths, the simplicity and ease of maintenance of the Novus have significantly assisted their production. Sean Cornes, commented, “The Novus machine has helped us to increase our productivity in the packaging of our fruit, nuts and seed products. It is easy to operate and customer support is always available from Hayssen Flexible Systems.”

Michelle’s Bakery
is a local favorite near Rutherford College, North Carolina. Alongside their grill, Michelle’s Bakery distributes a large variety of homemade cakes, pies, cookies and other desserts. Michelle’s Bakery recently trialed a new Rose Forgrove Merlin Blu flow wrapper. The company needed a flow wrapper that could handle the packaging of various smaller bakery items as well as whole pies and larger bakery products for retail display.

Tammy Cannon, Co-owner of Michelle’s Bakery, oversees the packaging of their bakery product lines, and was happy to accept the Merlin Blu on a trial basis. Positioned for substantial growth, the company had a need for automated packaging equipment.  Michelle’s Bakery has since purchased that same Merlin Blu, which steadily wraps cookies day after day. One of the features that appealed to Cannon was the hygienic features, with tool-less removal of guarding, which makes for fast and easy cleaning of the flow wrapper. Another benefit of the Merlin that led to a final sale is its capability to handle a wide range of products with its easy to use adjustable forming box and wide jaws. Taking advantage of these features and the user-friendly operator interface, Michelle’s Bakery can easily switch from wrapping small cookies to full size pies. The B&R Industrial Automation control system with color icon controls make it easy for Cannon’s team to set packaging parameters and make quick changeovers.

Ryan Glenn, Horizontal Sales Leader for Hayssen Flexible Systems, coordinated the project with Michelle’s Bakery. He comments, “I initially bought one of Michelle’s Bakery pound cake slices while traveling. I was impressed with their high-quality bakery products.  Their close proximity to our global headquarters in Duncan, SC, where the Merlin Blu is manufactured, made them an ideal candidate for a beta installation. The Merlin Blu is an ideal flow wrapper to help them achieve packaging that effectively displays Michelle’s Bakery tasty treats while maintaining the freshness of their products. I look forward to partnering with Michelle’s Bakery as their operations continue to grow.”

Currently, Michelle’s Bakery is using the Merlin Blu to wrap their famous chocolate oatmeal cookies in single serve packs at 50 packs per minute, as well as whole coconut pies at a rate of 25 per minute.

MOLINO ANDINO S.A. headquartered in La Paz is a large Bolivian producer of Flours and Pasta who has been present on the market for over 35 years. Molino Andino purchased its first wheat flour mill in 1978. In 1999 Molino Andino started to diversify its offerings by acquiring its first pasta processing lines and the company has been steadily expanding its output since. In 2010, Molino Andino decided to enter the bakery business by purchasing a processing line for panettone and muffins and it is currently installing another two state-of-the-art biscuit lines as well as one wafer line in a plant of over 7000 m2.

In view of major growth, MOLINO ANDINO S.A. is now further expanding by creating ALIMENTOS AGUA CLARA S.A. that will start its operations in June, 2015 in the new Santa Cruz site.  To improve efficiency in its packaging division at the historic plant of La Paz, as well as to freshly equip the new Santa Cruz plant, MOLINO ANDINO has completely relied on SCHIB – HAYSSEN FLEXIBLE SYSTEMS technology.

Carlos Gutierrez Vega, Managing Director of Molino Andino, affirms that he made the decision of contracting Schib because of the excellent reputation Schib enjoys in South America.  Schib, an Italian-based manufacturer, is very well known and appreciated for both the high quality of its equipment and the careful after-sales service it offers to the customer base.  Schib Sales Director Elvio Corato adds, “Culminating a constant field work, Schib is now acquiring this important job order that includes various primary and secondary packaging lines for wafer and panettone as well as for biscuits and crackers in pile and on edge.”

Schib’s lines dedicated to on-edge collations of products are ideal for packaging biscuits, crackers, and cookies on edge, assuring that the product is gently handled and yet offering total control of the slug throughout the packaging cycle. A 90° feeder takes the products on edge, either manually or automatically fed, and transfers them into the in-feed chain of the flow pack machine.  At this point, the collations of products are supported and transferred to the end seal head.  5-axis servo control, automatic film splicing, photocell for print registered films, and No Product – No Bag function complete the line configuration. Speeds up to 120 packs per minute. For more details, visit Schib’s website.
